Flying. Not at the intangible height of a jet, but at
spitting distance from the treetops. Were in central
Alaska, the Big Lonely, just north of the Arctic Circle.

A thick forest follows the contours of mountain foothills
like a deep-pile carpet. Up at treeline the forestthins to
tundra, a grassy
thing like fingernails across slate. It sets our teeth on
edge, twists the MUSIC, and sends TINA running.
3. INT. BOILER ROOM. 3.
Suddenly TINAs a tiny figure running among huge boilers steam
pipes and catwalks -- a shadowed forest of iron and stone. She
stops, listening intently as the SOUND of tiny hooves suddenly
turns into the rattle of DISTANT RAIN.
Then she hears RIPPING FABRIC.

FOREST - WATER TOWER - DAY
A towering monolith, surrounded by tall oaks and
sycamores. The tower is immense. A single ladder runs up
to the top.
AT THE TOP
Just above the tree tops, the view is spectacular. CHUCK
GIEG, 16, sits thin and unsteady. Chucks gaze is drawn
upward -- to the building spring cumulus clouds. Chucks
older brother WILL, 18, stout, self assured, pulls himself
to the top.

FOREST - BOND SKIS THROUGH THE PINES -
EXT. MOUNTAIN CLIFF -
Bond hurtles over the side, going airborne, landing 100 feet below,
amidst boulders. In perfect Olympic form, he skis out, and down.
EXT. MOUNTAINSIDE -
Bond slaloms down, in and out of trees, to avoid detection. At the
bottom, where the snow thins, he comes to:
A ROCK OUTCROPPING.
Hiding behind the rock, Bond takes off his skis, knapsa
thin ice of early winter.
With the house visible BG, we CRANE DOWN below the parapet wall
along which a guard is a white exposure-suit is walking... down
along the dark wall to the grating... TILTING DOWN to see a
glow pulsing under the ice.
3 EXT. BENEATH THE ICE, UNDERWATER - NIGHT
Camera moving toward: A FIGURE in diving gear working at the
metal bars with an oxygen arc cutting torch. One bar
thin, lethal blade free. Working deliberately,
delicately, Somerset cuts a square around the rose, then peels
the square of dry wallpaper away from the wall. He studies it in
his hand.
2 EXT. OLD HOUSE -- DAY 2
Somerset stands in front of the old home. He looks out at the
surrounding farms and forests. He ponders something. Birds
sing.
MAN (O.S.)
Is something wrong?
Somerset does not respond, jus
forest, an old PICKUP TRUCK drives carefully through the
snow.
Wipers swish slowly to reveal a slender woman of refined
beauty. HATSUE MIYAMOTO stares ahead at the snow-clad road,
her father HISAO at the wheel beside her.
CUT TO:
EXT. AMITY HARBOR/SAN PIEDRO ISLAND FERRY - DAY
...a view through another windscreen. This time of moving
WATER. In the rear-view mirror, a dapper man in his 40s
grooms
thing TRICKLES DOWN INTO FRAME - BLOOD. Running thin,
then thicker, as we CONTINUE TO MOVE UP the stairs and find -
A BODY, sprawled awkwardly across the stones, arms and legs
akimbo, not so much Christ-like as victim-like. In one hand
the Body holds a GUN he never had a chance to use. In the
other - A DARK SHAPE, we cant quite tell what it is.
FOOTSTEPS sound from above and - THE KILLER walks in
thin figure and
concrete hair. Betty crosses to her husband and hands him a
fresh martini. She kisses him on the cheek.
BETTY
How was your day?
GEORGE
Oh, swell. You know, Mr. Connel said
that if things keep going the way they
are, I might be seeing that promotion
sooner than I thought.
BETTY
Oh darling thats wonderful!
(an adoring gaze)
I always knew you could do it.
